A StickerApp Interview Written by Nora 2024-10-03
Lloyd Stratton is an illustrator and artist from Brighton, UK. Specialising in fine detail pen and ink drawings, he creates limited edition prints and collaborates with world renowned brands to produce striking visuals that invoke a strong sense of intrigue and nostalgia.
StickerApp: How would you define your style?
Lloyd: I create hand drawn pen and ink illustrations that focus on the natural world with a strong emphasis on detail and craftsmanship.
StickerApp: What's your favorite technique?
Lloyd: I mostly use stippling techniques to build up tone and texture in my drawings. It can be a laborious process but the results are often very rewarding.
StickerApp: Who or what's your biggest inspiration?
Lloyd: Some of my biggest inspirations were my favourite childhood illustrators. Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak was one of my favourite books and I loved the intricacy and expressiveness you could see in the hand drawn illustrations. Similarly with Quentin Blake and Raymond Briggs' ink work. More recently I’ve been using old botanical and zoology textbooks for inspiration.
StickerApp: How did it all start?
Lloyd: I’ve been drawing from a very early age. My dad is an art teacher so I grew up in a household where creativity was heavily encouraged. I’d spend most of my lessons in school secretly drawing in my sketchbook and it was always something I knew I wanted to pursue as a career.
StickerApp: Do you have a tip for those who are starting out?
Lloyd:Try to find a way to make your work stand out. Illustration is a very saturated industry and I think it’s important to craft your own visual identity to separate yourself from the crowd. Work hard, don’t be discouraged and stay true to what feels fun and exciting to you.
StickerApp: What's your favorite app or program?
Lloyd: I try and use as little digital process as possible with my art. I scan my drawings and adjust the levels and make some very minor tweaks in Photoshop to make sure it’s clean, sharp and ready for print. I like all my products to be as close to the original illustration as possible though.
StickerApp: Why do you use StickerApp?
Lloyd: The high quality and variety of materials make for such interesting and creative stickers. The possibilities of what you can create are endless.
StickerApp: What's your favorite material?
Lloyd: I love the matte holographic effect. It allows the black detail of my work to stand out against a really eye catching background.
StickerApp: How do you use stickers for your own business/personal brand?
Lloyd: I include free stickers with most of my print orders as well as selling larger sticker packs which include a collection of designs on various materials.
