Sticker Sheet Layout Requirements

This article outlines the technical layout requirements for preparing a correct sticker sheet file. It covers mandatory spacing between stickers, bleed specifications, cutline standards, and minimum size constraints to ensure accurate cutting and predictable production results.

Spacing, Cutlines, Bleed

Sticker sheet layouts must follow specific spacing, bleed, and cutline requirements to ensure accurate cutting and clean separation of each sticker. These guidelines apply to all sticker sheets regardless of size, material, or design complexity.

Spacing Requirements

Correct spacing prevents cutlines from overlapping and ensures clean peelability.

Mandatory Spacing Between Stickers

  • Minimum spacing: 0.075"/2 mm
This distance must be maintained between every sticker cutline on the sheet.

Spacing Between Stickers and Sheet Edge

  • Minimum edge spacing: 0.075"/2 mm
No sticker cutline may be placed closer than this distance to the outer sheet boundary.

Purpose of Spacing Requirements

  • Prevents cutting interference

  • Ensures machine tolerance

  • Reduces risk of unintended edge cuts

  • Improves consistency across sheet batches

Bleed Requirements

Bleed ensures that artwork extends beyond the cutline to avoid unwanted white edges.

Mandatory Bleed per Sticker

  • Bleed: 0.075”/2 mm extending outside each cutline

Bleed Rules

  • Bleed mustn't follow the sticker shape, but it sure looks better

  • Bleed should not be placed inside the sticker

  • Background colors and elements can either extend fully into the bleed, or not, if you want the background color of the sheet as the sticker border

  • Do not include critical elements in the bleed zone

Cutline Requirements

Cutlines define the peelable shape of each sticker on the sheet.

Cutline Specifications

  • Stroke width: 1 pt

  • Line style: Solid, fully closed path

  • Color: A single spot color can be used (commonly 100% magenta)

  • Position: Centered between the sticker and the bleed

  • Corners: Rounded corners recommended for stability, or sharp corners over 30°

Technical Notes

  • Cutlines must not overlap or intersect

  • Each sticker requires its own separate cutline

  • Ensure cutlines align with your intended sticker shape

Minimum Size Requirements

The following minimums apply to all stickers placed on a sheet:

Minimum Sticker Size

  • 0.23"/6 mm
Smaller shapes may result in cutting inconsistencies or peel issues.

Minimum Shape Detail

  • Very fine decorative shapes may require increased spacing

  • Small inner angles or sharp points may not cut cleanly

Common Layout Issues to Avoid

To ensure predictable results, avoid the following:

  • Cutlines closer than 0.075"/2 mm to each other

  • Cutlines placed directly on the sheet boundary

  • Artwork that does not extend into the bleed

  • Shared cutlines between multiple stickers

  • Excessively complex shapes with unsupported detail sizes

  • Overlapping bleed areas that cause color contamination

Summary

A correct sticker sheet layout must include:

  • 0.075"/2 mm spacing between stickers and to the sheet edge

  • 0.075"/2 mm bleed around each sticker

  • 1 pt fully closed cutlines following each sticker’s shape

  • Minimum sticker size of 0.23"/6 mm

Adhering to these standards ensures accurate cutting, consistent quality, and predictable production across all materials and sheet formats.
