What is the difference between varnish and laminate on a label?

The main difference is the level of protection. Varnish provides a light protective coating, while laminate adds a durable film layer that protects against moisture, oils, scratches, and everyday wear.

Varnish vs. laminate

  • Varnish is a liquid coating applied directly to the printed surface of the label. It helps enhance colors and provides some resistance to scratches, but it does not make the label waterproof.

  • Laminate is a thin film applied over the printed label. It creates a protective barrier that helps shield the design from water, oils, chemicals, and abrasion.

For labels used indoors and in dry conditions, varnish is often enough. For products exposed to moisture, frequent handling, or tougher environments, laminate is usually the better choice.
